World Trade Centre - 1973

World Trade Centre - 1973

I found a photograph online of the World Trade Centre in 1973 (see below). I searched for this after listening to Thomas Ruff talk about his work and how he uses images off of the internet and found photographs in his work.  He showed an image of his work of the world trade centre post 9/11 which I had a feeling would come up. I still struggle to look at images of the world trade centre as I immediately look at approximately the floor my Aunt was on when the attack took place.

Whenever you search for World Trade Centre now you are guaranteed that 99% of all images that return from that search will be to do with 9/11. They were such an iconic structure before the terrorist attack and so I wanted to find an image which portrayed a very different 9/11. I found the image below which was very grainy and had a pink hue to it. With a little work I managed to make the colours more realistic and enjoyed looking at an image which didn't depict such violence and terror. After recent conversations about Authorship and in particular the work of Richard Prince I'm not sure I could now call this image my own work but I do feel I have re appropriated it to tell the story I want to tell, so maybe it is...? Feel free to comment below with your thoughts as I am really interested on peoples opinions in terms of this image.
