Hernandez' work caught my eye on a purely aesthetic level through his re appropriation of imagery. With my current practise there is a certain element of appropriation as I am displaying the family photographs of other people combined with their portrait I have made at the same time. I am not displaying their images as my own work however but as a collaboration between myself and the owner. The family album is a very private thing and this work is all about putting these private images of family into the public domain.
Looking at work like this I am feeling like I am battling between two areas of practise. One part of me wants to explore this found imagery and continue with the collaborative approach using other peoples family albums. On the other hand this module being so industry focused is making me want to gear my work towards an editorial market with portraits and documentary story telling. This is why I have made quite stylised (for me) portraits to sit alongside the appropriated imagery as a way to develop my own portraiture as well as continue with this research.
