The New Village - John Spinks

John Spinks spoke at the recent symposium in Falmouth. As I am developing my work towards an editorial market I have spent some time recently getting feedback from picture editors on how to improve my portfolio. One of the people it was suggested I look at was John Spinks. So because of this I was already familiar with his commercial and editorial work which I absolutely love.

To see a photographer who in a way I aspire to be in a sense that he is a very successful editorial photographer who is frequently commissioned by The Telegraph amongst others, shooting such a personal project which has spanned over a number of years is really exciting for me and has actually given me loads of ideas for my own practise.

After hearing John speak at the symposium to see these images shows that he really does bring his personality out in his work. He is quite quiet and comes across very soft and gentle which is exactly how I would describe his beautiful work.

"The New Village can also be read as a quiet, meticulous meditation..." (O'Hagen,S)

What really resonates with me is the way you feel close in some way to the unnamed village in the photographs. Whilst looking at the images I recalled people and places from my own childhood that I could almost put into these photographs. Perhaps its the " Fractured sense of belonging" that O'Hagen queries that has given me such inspiration to journey back to my childhood town to make some work?
