I read this article about Sabene Mirlesse' photographs Going Home/Dust/Ashes. The series explores the notion of Home which I guess is what I am thinking about in my own practise.
That place from which we emerge, a place that is at once physical and psychological, metaphorical and emotional, the genesis of who we are and what we become. - Mutantspace
Home has a very different meaning to may people. I think for me I still call Barton in Torquay home even though I only lived there for the first seven years of my life. Mirlesse talks about this idea of Home in a short text about the work..
This ongoing project is based on interpretations of origin and return to where one comes from. It is an investigation into the emotional experience of ‘home’ and what that means for different individuals—whether it be a place of nostalgia or of dread— it ultimately relates to the reality of one’s mortality and intimate journey through the self. I believe the passage of time is most apparent in the relationship between a person and the origin-place he or she departs from both physically and emotionally in the natural course of his or her evolution and aging process leaving both family and/or landscape behind.
It is both the people and the landscape which as a whole is 'Home' and Mirlesse's work confirms my ideas that it is the people who are still living in Barton as well as the changed landscape that I must photograph to recreate my own sense of 'Home'. In terms of the aesthetic used here, I find some of the images very tranquil and relatable but others I find quite jarring in composition. Perhaps this is highlighting the difference between different peoples perception of Home?
